When choosing a location for your business, you should consider the factors that employees look for in a workplace. Just like offering a solid benefits package, the location and condition of the building in which your business is located has the ability of attracting or repelling quality candidates. Let’s explore a few examples. 

Many younger people enjoy working in the hustle and bustle of a city where they can meet other young professionals, while many middle-aged people tend to prefer the quiet of the suburbs. If you have a target workforce, you may want to consider these preferences. And no matter what age, most people prefer to work in an area that offers many restaurant options and a variety of stores so they can run errands during their lunch break. 

Branching off the urban vs. suburban example, public transportation also plays a role. Many people now wish to save gas money and take a bus or train to work. A location with nearby access to public transportation is seen as attractive for many people. But, ensure that your location also has ample (and safe!) parking areas for those who still prefer to drive. 

Many people also look for amenities, both internal and external. An office building with a gym has a lot to offer, but so does a building near a gym with which your business has partnered to offer a membership discount to your employees. Sitting at a computer all day can be tiresome, but employees can stretch and relax at a nearby park, lake or even in the building’s lobby. 

Though amenities are optional, the cleanliness and maintenance of the building is not. Plainly stated, employees will be deterred by a building in a state of disrepair. Ensure that your business’ location is routinely cleaned (particularly the bathrooms) and that any problems are repaired as soon as possible. 

Though many employees are not turned away by working in cubicle, ensure that each cubicle has enough space for employees to easily work. If possible, it’s best not to cram many cubicles into a small area. Having a bit more space allows for a quieter, more comfortable workplace.
